Around Iceland in 7 days. (part 1)

Dlatego niech Was nie zwiedzie wiele ujęć zamieszczonych poniżej.

7 days, 2,940 driven kilometers and over 40 visited places.

Iceland is characterized by an extraordinary diversity; each kilometer can be surprising and very impressive. I admit that I was going to this place with a focus on complete wildness and remoteness. The mass of miraculous pictures, which I saw for months in advance on the web, showed me an island full of freshness and complete isolation from the world and people, and it tricked me. A little shame on me, because I'm a photographer and I happen to create reality in the way that I want to see it as well. This island is still extremely impressive, still incredibly wild and uncouth, but no longer so lonely. For several years, this has been one of the most popular tourist destinations. Around Reykjavik alone, you can collide with hundreds of tourists swirling around the biggest attraction called the Golden Circle. However, the further out we explored the island, there fewer people we met, but still the entire route didn’t have a single place where we were completely alone. Even the smallest, most hidden attractions were crowded. Well... I think we are a few years late with this trip, when you could still feel like the only being on Earth.

Therefore, don’t let me deceive you with the many photographs below. You can be sure that on a lot of shots, right behind my back, like ants, strolled hundreds of crazy people: D

From the first moments over the island, already from the plane, everything was breathtaking. Endless wilderness, glaciers, ocean...

The plane landed in the evening. The first night we spent in the hostel Apotek in Akranes, not far from Reykjavik. The road to this great little town tuned us to discover this place. The hostel is in an old building that was once the local pharmacy. The town is very charming; its attraction is the lighthouse located only a stone's throw from the hostel. It was nice to start our journey there.

Dzień 1 / Day 1

The first point of the trip was the National Park Þingvellir (Thingvellir), located by Lake Thingvallavatn. It is an extremely interesting place. There, the contact of plate tectonic, Eurasian and North American, together created the canyon Almannagja. It is also an important place for the history of Iceland. For the first time, it gathered Icelandic parliament Althing, which is one of the oldest parliamentary institutions of the world that exists today.
This place was enlisted on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Another point was the largest and most popular active Icelandic geyser, Strokkur. The geyser erupts every 5-7 minutes, throwing a good few meters of hot water up the column, that can reach 100 degrees.
In the same geothermal fields, you can find the slightly smaller springs Smiður and Litli-Strokkur - with the endless hordes of tourists, of course.
On the way to this location we visited a fishing village called Eyrabakki and the small town Selfoss.

Gullfoss, czyli Złote Wodospady, to jedne z najpopularniejszych islandzkich wodospadów.

Gullfoss, or Golden Falls, is one of the most popular Icelandic waterfalls. Impressive is the view of two huge waterfalls, 21 and 11 meter, from which every second hundreds of cubic liters of water runs off.

Muszę przyznać, że ubawiło mnie, kiedy mój mąż oświadczył, że jednym z punktów naszej wycieczki będzie farma pomidorów Friðheimar. Bo cóż to za atrakcja... pomidory. Pomidory z farmy.

I must admit that it amused me when my husband said that one of the points of our trips will be a  Friðheimar tomato farm. Because what is the attraction in... tomatoes... Tomatoes from a farm. Quickly I changed my mind. The farm is a family business, tomatoes are grown all year round in huge greenhouses heated by geothermal energy, enough to heat a small town. The visit there was really interesting. The restaurant is located just in the greenhouse, the menu includes tomatoes in every imaginable form, from traditional soups, to pasta, desserts, including apple pie and ice cream (by the way cruelly tasty!). And drinks with Mary in the lead role, in various forms.
The warm climate of greenhouses, fresh basil bushes on the tables, the smell of tomatoes, which evoked my childhood and their sweet, ripe flavor, which for years I didn't taste in our tomatoes. So Mum, don't read this, but I ate there the most delicious tomato soup in my life.
We allowed ourselves to change our plans a little and go back there the last day before leaving (:

No właśnie... taki był plan.

No i jedno, całkiem istotne... kąpiel w nich cholernie uzależnia!

After making our tummies happy we went on a little relaxing tour to the hot spring Hrunalaug. Yeah... that was the plan. However, this point of the trip wasn't checked well enough. I was unable to find it after online research, it turned out that currently there is no possibility of using this spring. Unfortunately, as the tourists and owner of the place told us, tourists destroyed the spring two years ago.
Literally next to the place where it was supposed to be, was the Secret Lagoon, which wasn’t included in the plan, but pleased our frozen backs perfectly.

The island has more than 750 hot springs; many of them can reach up to 100 or even 200 degrees. Hot springs are a great gift to Icelanders and they heat the homes or greenhouses for them. The springs adapted to swim in the larger and smaller resorts attract masses of people all year around, who want to feel an unusual clash of two worlds: the harshness and coldness that we experience over the entire surface of the island and the hot and blazing life from inside earth.
Well, one, very important ... a bath in them is damn addictive!

After a relaxing bath we took the direction of the camping in Langbrók, but distance and laziness made us stop in Árnes. It was not the best camping place in the world; in the middle of complete nowhere, though there were booths with showers and toilets. But that's all. Low temperatures and rain encouraged us only to quickly sleep and then continue out of there as soon as possible.

Dzień 2 / Day 2

Travelling around the Icelandic roads is a real treat for the eyes. The changing of landscape every moment, the power of the living, like his life, sheep and horses, kilometers of fog, clouds, diverse weather. No wonder that this country is a real inspiration for photographs, films and novels. Although this time we were there purely for tourist purposes, we’ll happily go back there to capture some of the stories that came to mind during the entire trip.

The next day promised to be equally intense. We had plans to visit the National Parks Landmannalaugar and Thorsmork, Canyon Stakkholtsgjá, the lakes Ljótipollur, Frostastaðavatn and the volcano Laki and Eyjafjallajökull that is still active.
Unfortunately, weather conditions made the off-roads closed down at that time, which were the only way to these places. We were terribly sad, because it was one of those places that we really had waited to see.
Instead, on our way to the next attraction, we decided to drive around the volcano Eyjafjallajökull as far as we could. This was the first place where we were relatively by ourselves and where we could do the first few photographs for our wedding session.
We could see how important it is to travel around these areas with a four-wheel driven car, when we found these places, considering the uncertain roads, crossing through streams and rivers, causing all times creeps. I can say that from now on we started to feel a little wildness and severity of this country.

Another of the attractions was two waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss, which can be incredibly picturesque with beautiful weather and somewhat hidden between the rocks Gljúfrabúi. The first can be seen up close, thanks to the pathways leading to the back of the waterfall, allowing you to feel its power from a different perspective. The second is located just a few steps away from the more famous Seljalandsfoss, shrouded in mystery and unusual intimacy.

Although the route of the day went on mercilessly, and nearby there were no places to stop for food. Near the waterfalls, on the route between 245 and 242 appears Gamla fjósið, a restaurant in a converted, old barn, where the menu is based on ingredients grown on the owners’ own farm. We saw happy free-range cows eating fresh grass, that indeed guaranteed healthy and tasty meat (because of hunger and a little bit of joy finding a restaurant in this area, I did not take any photos ;)).

Now, we come to my biggest disappointment on this trip, which is the oldest Icelandic pool, Seljavallalaug. The attraction is infamous as it is the most hidden Icelandic secret that many tourists skip because they don't have enough patience or knowledge of how to get there. Being the most popular pool from Pinterest and Instagram pictures, it was showing the absolute wilderness. Stupid me had dreamt about pictures in a similar vein, but nope. It wasn’t going to happen... The crowd by this pool was about the same as the famous geyser and the most famous waterfall, but was further away from civilization so I wasn’t prepared for the crowds from photos I’ve seen before. It made us don't want to relax again our frozen rumps. Anyway, the water temperature was not particularly encouraging.
Maybe if we visit this place on a more abstract time, it could be possible to avoid the crowd. After all, people do get this place completely deserted. Maybe another time, because preparing for another post-wedding shot and to uphold even a little established travel schedule, the next morning we had to choose to wake up early to get to a spot for a session. But about that I'll tell a few pictures later (:

Następna atrakcja z listy obrzydliwie obleganych, to wodospad Skógafoss. Można by go nazwać "orłowem Islandii" (fotografowie ślubni z Trójmiasta zrozumieją ;)).

The next  awfully crowded attraction on the list was the waterfall Skógafoss. It is really impressive, with its 60 meters height, and width of 25 meters. It turned out to be one of the most charming and photogenic waterfalls that we saw on Iceland. No wonder it's beneath Skógafoss that the most romantic shots of couples in love are taken. We planned to spend the night quite close to this place, so the plan for the day was another unplanned early morning. We woke up at four to come back here and make the best picture ever. It worked, though not without companions, who came up with a similar idea to get up at dawn for better shots

Another perfect camping spot was the beautiful village Vík, located on the glacier Mýrdalsjökull. But before we landed, we decided to see another attraction that is not mentioned in the guide books, but it doesn't matter when we have internet. The famous plane-wreck American aircraft Dakota, which 73 years ago due to lack of fuel had to emergency land on the beach - without any human casualties. Since it happened you have been able to admire it, but some tourists allow themselves to disassemble it piece by piece. I would recommend hurrying with the visits, because it is already less and less ;)
The attraction is located about 4 kilometers to one side of the highway (the exact location is marked on the map). In theory, it leads to a road for 4x4 vehicles, but in our case the road was closed. It put us for an unforgettable walk, which I rather won’t repeat, taking into account what happened to us at the end, despite the crowd of people jumping on the wreckage. It's a cherry on the cake on a day of disappointment. After all, camping in a wonderful, fairy-tale village added some strength.

I must admit that I did not expect such an extent until the writing of the post, so I let myself to divide the rest of the trip into three parts.
